If you have arrived here, either you or someone you care about is likely experiencing symptoms that indicate they are going through perimenopause. This is the period of time before someone’s periods cease, they no longer ovulate and their body cannot satisfactorily produce the hormones oestrogen, progesterone or testosterone at high enough levels for their body to function as healthily, which also puts their long term health at greater risk.
For complete transparency, this page and my services are HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) affirming and I see replacing someone’s hormones as the most effective and natural response to menopausal hormone deficiency in the overwhelming majority of cases. If you are looking for solutions that reject HRT as an option, you may still find the page informative but my guidance as an HRT educator may not be the best fit. Please get in touch if you’d like to discuss further.
Please also note that my practice is trans and nonbinary affirming so I am inclusive of all those with bodies that have a uterus and/or who will experience an inevitable decline in hormones towards the menopause.
In the UK, approximately 51% of the population will experience the menopause if they live to the age where their bodies begin to lose their natural hormones. Sadly, research on the menopause and on bodies with a uterus has been underwhelming and at times inaccurate and this has not only set our health care back decades, it has prevented it from being as robust, safe or evidence-based as it could be.
Here are some facts that may help you decide whether you might benefit from my support, either by booking an HRT and menopause assessment or if appropriate, through therapy (please feel free to visit my Therapy With Me page).
Menopause is defined as the moment your periods cease but since this is usually a gradual decline, you are considered menopausal when you haven’t had a period for a full year. The average age for reaching the menopause is 51 with the most expected age range being 45-55.
Perimenopause is the time prior to the menopause when the body is undergoing hormonal decline and this can last anywhere from 7-12 years. Periods become irregular and a number of other symptoms may be experienced, their impact varying from discomfort to debilitating effects that can devastate someone’s ability to function in the day to day. (see the Symptom Checker below for some of the symptoms experienced in perimenopause).
Even if your perimenopausal symptoms are not too disruptive, your body is still losing its hormones which won’t return naturally. Considering HRT doesn’t just support your health heading towards menopause but research has demonstrated that it also reduces your risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia and diabetes post menopause.
Approximately 1% of people under 40 and 0.1% of those under 30 experience early menopause or what is termed Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) and this is often not picked up because many doctors are trained ‘when they hear hoof beats, to look for horses not zebras’! This means if you are out of the expected age for menopause onset (post 45), you may find awareness for early menopause is minimal.
Many people experience a significant exacerbation of their ADHD or other executive functioning challenges associated with their neurodivergence as they enter perimenopause. This can result in considerable disruption for those already diagnosed or self-realising as ND but it has led to a considerable but unsurprising upturn in the recognition and diagnosis of women being diagnosed as ADHDers as well.
